First Project of the New Year - Adding a New Kitchen Island

Well January is well underway and with that we are continuing to work on finishing up the kitchen.

Last week we purchased a new island for the kitchen at Costco.  I gave you a sneak peek of the island on Facebook last week.  We bought the Whalen Industrial Metal and Wood Workbench.

Sunday morning McG took apart the old island and split it into two cabinets and we moved them on either side of the picture window by the dining table.  Here's a quick pic I took with my phone...sorry for the grainy appearance.  We still have to paint the base of the cabinet.

Here's the inspiration we had in mind when we purchased the island.  An open bottomed island with a more industrial look.  A statement piece for the kitchen.

The island was fairly easy to put together and McG did all the work on this one - he deserves the credit.

Some of the photos were taken at night, so I apologize for the photos, but I was able to get a few today while the sun was out as well.

I added some baskets to the bottom to hold some cutting boards, and mason jars and an industrial looking basket to hold my potatoes.

Our existing bar stools look good with the island and we will be keeping them for now.  You can see half of the old island in the background of this picture.

We are enjoying the new island and the contrast it brings to the white kitchen.  What do you think of the new island?  Is it something you might like in your home?  We'd love to hear from you!!

At Long Last...The Kitchen Reveal

While it's not totally done yet, I wanted to share the great transformation the kitchen has undergone so far.  Here is where we started when we bought the house in August of 2014.

Oak cabinets stained dark walnut and great hardwood floors.

We took down the shelving on either side of the sink cabinets and took down the wavy valance that really dated the kitchen.

The layout and flow of the kitchen worked well, but we wanted to lighten things up.

Back in March we took down the wall between the kitchen and the living room.

We patched the floors where the wall came down.

We took down the wooden hood vent cover and opened up the shelving over the stove.  Next we ripped out the old counter tops and installed new ones, along with a new sink.

We boxed in the cabinets around the sink and moved and centered the light fixture and added new lights throughout the kitchen.  We also purchased cabinet doors from the Habitat Restore to finish off the ends of the cabinets around the sink.

Next we added bead board as a back splash and as wainscotting around the room.  The paint colour was changed as well to Dorian Grey by Sherwin Williams.

We also painted and added new trim. The room is so much lighter and brighter already at this point.

We sent the cabinet doors out to be sprayed and we painted the bases and crown molding.

AND HERE SHE IS NOW...(I apologize for the dark pictures...it's been cloudy and raining here for days!)

We added a new bank of drawers on the base cabinets.

One of the last projects was to add this tile around the stove area and around the window.
More on this project to come at a later date.

Projects still to come in the kitchen:

-   add drywall to the ceiling to cover the stucco
-   split the island in two and install cabinets on either side of the window
-   build a new island
-   finish up the columns between the kitchen and the living room

What do you think about our kitchen transformation?  I am loving it!!

Painting the Kitchen

Things are still moving along in the kitchen makeover...

We started to paint the walls this week.  I had chosen Magnetic Gray by Sherwin Williams,,,

...but it dried too blue.

Back to Lowe's I went to find something that was a truer Gray colour...and I think I found it with
Dorian Gray.

With so much white in the kitchen with the bead board and counters and cabinets, I felt I could
get away with a darker Gray.  It was very difficult picking a Gray..most were too blue, or too green.  Trying the colour in your room is a big help.  I had my heart set on the Magnetic Gray, but when it turned out so blue, I knew we had to go with something different.  We will use that paint in one of the spare rooms later this year.  It will definitely not go to waste!!

While McG has been at work this week, I've been painting trim.

He boxed in the window around the sink to give it a cleaner look.  We purchased two small cabinet doors at the habitat to finish off the ends of the cabinets.

I love to keep it real here...so here's a picture taken this morning of the state of the kitchen...

No glamour shots here, that's for sure!!  Hopefully the next tour will have this put all back together!
