Thrift Store Thursday

Welcome to Thrift Store Thursday!

My Best Friend and I have been getting together pretty regularly to spend the day thrift shopping and sharing lunch.  Not only do we get to spend some quality time together, we both LOVE searching for "treasures".  We call it our Treasure Hunting Day! We are not always successful, but this week we both did well with our "haul"!

Here's what I picked up this week!

1. A floral crock - which I'm using to corral all my kitchen utensils by the stove - $1.99
2.  A blue cornflower corningware dish = $2.99
3. A cute birdhouse wreath to add to my front porch decor - $3.99
4.  A fish plate - $1.99
5.  A small floral in a white distressed frame - $2.00
6.  NOT SHOWN - I also picked up a wine rack made from a pallet for $5...it's outside - I'm going to  re-purpose it into a planter to hang on the fence.

For less than $20 I've got some new treasures to use in my home.

Do you treasure hunt with friends?  I'd love to see what you've found!

Progress on Removing the Wall

WE'VE MADE SOME GOOD PROGRESS AND REMOVING THE WALL!!
I don't mean to shout, but I cannot tell you enough how much I LOVE how this has turned out!

Here's where we started...

This is the view from the living room...with a few paint samples before we decided we should take the wall out...

This is the wall on the kitchen side as we started to demo...
you can see a few paint samples here as well.

When we removed the drywall, there were two layers of chip board between the sections.
This was most likely done back in the '70's when the sections were shipped here to keep them stable.
Once they arrived on site here, the two sections were then put together.

The view is starting to open up!

This is the new view into the kitchen, plus/minus a few 2 x4's

Here's the new view with all the new headers installed and the wiring re-worked.

We made the decision to leave the headers visible so that we didn't need to rework the ceilings in the two rooms.  I didn't want the ceiling beams to continue into the living area.
We did add some addition electrical into the two posts for outlets in case furniture
placement warranted a table with a lamp and we added new electrical in the
living room ceiling to accommodate a ceiling fan.

We will be finishing out the posts and headers this week and then tackling the floor.
There is currently hardwood floors in both the rooms, so we will be using some extra
flooring we have on hand and possibly stealing some from the coat closets to match it up.

Hopefully I will be back with another update on this project really soon!!

Our Next Project...

We are fresh back from vacation and ready to tackle another BIG DIY project in our home!!

After living here for the last 6+ months, we've decided that we are going to take out the wall between the kitchen and living room areas.  I should clarify that I've wanted to do this since Day 1, but it's taken some time for me to convince McG that this is what we need to do.

We have good flow between the rooms now, but the home has low ceilings and I think it will make things look and feel a little larger around here.
Our home is a manufactured home that was made and put together here in about 1970.  There are beams on the kitchen ceiling but not in the living room so we will be keeping a small header, not only for structural reasons, but also for esthetics's as I don't want to continue the ceiling beams into the living room area.

These are a few ideas that we are looking at for inspiration.  You can be sure that I will be searching for more via Pinterest!!

What do you think?

Have you opened up walls in  your home recently?
If so, I'd love to see them!!
