Thrift Store Finds

You all know by now how much I LOVE thrifting...finding anything at a bargain price is a SCORE for me!  Decorating on a budget can be tough, but I find thrifting the best way to find things for my home that don't break the bank.

Last week I found a couple of great things while out on my own.

This enamel jug for $3.99 that now houses my kitchen utensils by the stove.

This letter sorter.

I sprayed it black and am using it as a mini command center in the kitchen.

I also picked up a cute shelf for $5.99.  It's going to be used in the kitchen renovation which will be starting soon!  Don't you just love the scrolled brackets!

This week I found this great green glass leaf dish.

...and this wine crate from a local winery for $6.99.

I have been wanting this organizer for my make-up, but I didn't want to pay the $99 for it

I had McG take out the diagonal wood supports that hold the wine bottles and turn them up and down to create an organizer for my make-up.

I used some containers I had around the house for now, but I am on the look out for some wicker baskets or metal containers to get the look.

I wanted to update you on that chair that wicker chair that I rescued from the side of the road a few weeks ago.  Here's the before...

...and here it is now!  I gave it a fresh coat of paint and then McG rebuilt the springs and recovered it.
It now has a home in the spare bedroom.  Total cost for this transformation was $10 for the spray paint.  The fabric I had here already.

I'd love to see what you've thrifted...please send me a comment or a link so I can check it out!

Thrifty Finds in Muskoka!

McG and I had an opportunity to do some exploring a couple of weeks ago while we were visiting friends at their cottage.

Our day-trip into Bracebridge Ontario found us stopping at the local Royal Canadian Legion for a HUGE yard sale!!
I managed to find a couple of great things and only spent $1.50!

A small enamelware pail with its wooden handle, a blue glass carafe, and a bed-sheet.
You can see the colour of the glass better in this shot.  It's much like a great  blue Ball Mason Jar!

I LOVED the colours of the bed sheet and couldn't leave it there for 50 cents...I think its just what I need to finish up a storage solution in the laundry room...and that turquoise and orange and green pattern
...mmmm LOVE IT!!!
  Here's a closer look...

Oh and by the way...the laundry room is finally almost ready for a reveal!  It's only been, what, seven months since we showed you  "our dirty little secret".  Seven months we have spent on it, slowly making it more presentable...and it's still not my "dream laundry room" yet but its more functional and does look prettier than before!  This sheet will help to put the finishing touches on a storage solution in there.

Well, that's it for my Muskoka yard sale finds...
Do you visit yard sales while you are out of town???

I'd LOVE to hear from you - please leave a comment!!

Thrifty Finds

Wow - it's Friday already and I am getting ready for another great weekend of yard sales...but I forgot to show you what I snapped up last weekend!

I was on my own for sales, McG went fishing with his Dad and brother.  He has really been a lucky charm for me, but I was hoping for some luck on my own.

I found a few things - and spent a total of $14.00

First up - an antique bevelled mirror - $5.00  (didn't really need a mirror, but for that price I wasn't leaving it there - you never know when a mirror might come in handy)  It's a bit dusty - but I was anxious to get my pictures taken!!

A garden plaque - 25 cents!

A lamp - black candle stick base and gold shade with black trim - $1!!  I asked if it was working and they said it was - it even had a working bulb in it and it is a touch lamp tri-lite! -  BONUS SCORE!!

A purple purse, brand new, with the tags still on - $2!  I picked this up for my daughter, who at age 23, still loves purple!

A wooden sign - $1 - I was excited to find this...needing something for along the fence on the side of the garage...

I got it hung as soon as I got home - no wasting time on this one!

and finally - the find of the day...drum roll please!!!

A 4 ft brand new piece of counter-top for...wait for it....$5!!
McG has been wanting a place to clean his fish and is going to build himself a fish cleaning station in the garage, because I don't want him doing it in the kitchen!  It was marked $10 but when
I asked if they would take $5 they said YES - another great SCORE!!

We are set to visit some friends at their campground about an hour's drive from here this weekend.
AND GUESS WHAT!!!
The campground is having a YARD SALE!!
I am hoping that my lucky streak continues - I'll let you know next week
Until then!!

HAPPY WEEKEND!

Thrifty finds...weekend three

This past weekend, McG and I spent another Saturday morning hitting the yard sale circuit.  He has been lucky enough to have had the last couple of Saturdays off from work and we have enjoyed the time together.

We found a few goodies and spent less than $7 - total!!

The 2 electric coolers were FREE!! (but that was because they weren't working)

The Chandelier, the urn and the cone shaped planter were $2 each

The Yankee Candle was 10 cents (the scent is Hazelnut Coffee and it had only been lit once)

The brass crab was 50 cents

THE TOTAL SPENT WAS $6.60!!!

Here's a close -up of the urn. It's made of plaster and is more for indoor use, rather than outdoors.

McG got the larger of the coolers working and all he did was plug it in - LOL!  The other cooler was a no go - He thinks that they may have overheated the larger one and it shut itself off and they thought it was broken.  The smaller one needed re-wiring but even after that it didn't work so he is thinking the free-on cube was the problem.  It's no loss really since it was FREE!!

The chandelier was marked $5 but when the woman told him it wasn't working, he haggled her down to $2 - he's good at that - Me not so much!  She apologized for it not working and he told her it was okay because I wanted him to take the wiring out and use it for candles in our gazebo.  She said WOW I never thought of that - I can give you your $2 back if you leave me the chandelier because I have a gazebo!  He said sorry and chuckled.  I'm sure she was kicking herself for not thinking of that.

Once we arrived home, he stripped the wiring out of it and I washed up the glass hurricanes.

He put it all back together and added a length of chain so that we could hang it from the center of our gazebo.  It's been raining here pretty much since then, but I was able to get out there today and get a picture of it with some tea light candles in it.

The metal was a rusty brown colour, so I just left it that way, no painting required.  Here's a closer look.

The glass hurricanes have a "seeded" or wet look to them.  It really looks lovely and is a great addition to our gazebo and a steal at only $2!!  That's my kind of budget project!

We really have been finding some good things in our Saturday morning travels.

I'm really looking forward to getting out there again this weekend!

A Break from Holiday Decorating...(Living Room Reveal!)

I am taking a break from all things Christmas to post our finished living room.  McG celebrated his 50th last weekend and we really didn't work on any projects...except adding a rug to our living room.

Well - last week you got the reveal of the dining room - this week the living room!  I don't want to say it's "finished" - cause we all know for a home decor junky like me, a room is hardly ever done!  But it's one step closer to feeling done...This is what our living room looked like before we started our renovation.

Pear green walls with aqua accents and that orangey railing...and beige carpet that was way past its prime!

Now we've got grey blue walls, autumn oak laminate floors and white trim...and that railing is outta-here!

And here's the carpet we got for a steal of a deal yesterday at Home Depot - a golden-y chenille rug (originally way too expensive for our budget at $449) but in the sale bin for just $79!!  WOO HOO!
McG and I couldn't believe our eyes when we found it in the sale bin.  We had the sales clerk double check and sure enough it was marked down!  We quickly paid for it and got out of there before they came to their senses and changed their minds...

It has a two toned look with a soft backing that won't harm our new floors.  It also has a border of gold-y carmel which is lovely with our curtains.  Here's a closer look...

Oh, and this is our new coffee table/ottoman - that we also got on sale at Home Depot.  It really shows up now on the new carpet.  And below is a close-up of the fabric on our pillows...It reminds me of bark-cloth.
It has a mix of greens and blues that go well in our new room.

And finally here's a picture of the new wall that is now in place of the railing.  Sloan loves the new wall and likes to greet everyone from here - its so much easier for him to climb on than the old railing.

Except for some artwork over the couch, this room is finished.  I hope you enjoyed the tour of our living room renovation.

Happy Monday!

Hello there! - It's been a busy weekend over here...McG and I have been working on finishing up a few things - and while its not in any shape to be photographed yet - I thought I'd show you the vignette on our buffet which I put together last week.

I bet you thought you were going to see it decorated for Christmas - ha ha, fooled ya!  But don't worry I'll be decorating in the next week or so and I will be sure and update you all then.

The buffet was given to us by a friend of McG's Mom years ago.  She was moving to a smaller home and none of her children wanted it.  We took it in and McG refinished it.  It has had a place of prominence in our home since and I enjoy decorating it.

The orchid was given to me by a friend recently.  It's my first one and I am hoping to keep it alive for awhile!
The placemat underneath is the same pattern as our new curtains which I showed you back in October.  The bird print was a thrift store score at only $3.99 and it picks up on the browns used in the dining room and living room areas.  A final reveal of our renovation will be up later this week!

The lamp on the other side of the buffet was inherited from McG's Dad...It has been in his family since the 1940's and I love how it goes with our new colour scheme.  I added a new shade from IKEA and rounded out the this area with my thrifted owl and a candle.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek at our dining room buffet...Next week the new buffet will be coming in and I will be gifting this one to a friend.  Although I love this one, its time to get the one that matches our new dining set into its new home!  Thanks for stopping by!

Thrifty Finds...

Today I had the day to myself...McG is off deer hunting for the week - so I called up some friends and we headed out to the county for lunch and some shopping...I didn't buy much today - BUT I DID FIND THIS GUY...

and I got him for a steal!!!

sorry for the blurry-ness...I really do need a new camera!!! I found this lovely at the Value Village.  I had been looking for an owl for awhile - as I am sure you have seen, they seem to be all the rage in blog-land!

My daughter has one that looks like this...

She purchased this guy at Bath and Body Works...he's a lovely creamy white as most of the owls I have seen from Pottery Barn...I am not sure if my little guy will stay the original colour or if I will give him a coat of white spray paint...either way I am sure he will make a lovely addition to the shelves on my new media cabinet

.So, what do you think of my thrifty find?   I really love him!  I think he will show up better against the wood grain if he is white...might just be my project for tomorrow...

Did you go thrifting today?  I'd love to know what you found!
