Media Cabinet Transformation

Back when I started this blog I showed you some pictures of what our living room looked like before we started our current renovation...This was the 1970's bookcase we were using to house our TV and stereo equipment...functional - a great hand-me-down from my parents, but not very pretty!  We had a small 22 inch TV at that time, as most of our TV watching is done in the main family room in the basement.  McG won a new 32 inch TV back in August at his company golf tournament...so we needed to make it work in the living room.

I knew I would have to do this on a budget because most of the money we allotted for the renovation was going to pay for the new floors...

Here's another look at it...I had added contact paper to the doors and drawers here to try and get rid of some of the bad looking wood grain... In the new living room, I knew I wanted the media cabinet to be on the new short wall overlooking the entryway.  I wanted a sleeker, more modern cabinet and that's exactly what I got......SO HERE'S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW!

More sleek and modern - we took off the bookcase portion at the top and just kept the cabinet base...we took off the doors on either sides and added the Lansa handles from IKEA ($7.99 for a 2 pack of handles)

This transformation was cheap and easy and fit into our basically non-existent budget quite nicely - total cost about $40 - which included the 3 handles and the 6 castors McG installed on the bottom of the cabinet to make it easier to move on the new floors.  I am contemplating painting the 3 drawer fronts white - I had seen a similar one done on Pinterest - but for the life of me I can't find it now - guess its one of the Pins that Got Away from me...LOL - I did find something kind of similar on houzz.com (below)...

What do you think??? should I go for the white drawers on my "new" media cabinet or stay with all wood grain???  I think I'm going to live with the cabinet for awhile before I make my decision...I have styled them with some simple accessories...that knowing me, will be changing quite often in the coming days

HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT TRANSFORMATION??  I'd love to hear your thoughts on changing the drawer colour!

  1. this is now a fabulous piece! love the drawer pulls. what about painting the back of the shelves white? and maybe the actual shelf. i've got a piece i'd like to try this color combo on, too. this is making me excited to one day do that, lol.

  2. I hope you'll accept a kindly meant correction - McGyver and I should be McGyver and me. (You wouldn't say/write "Join I")

  3. Personally I like the drawers the same color, to stay with a cohesive look. Very sleek. It is great when we can use what we have to suit our current needs, isn't it? I'll bet you could even find a great way to repurpose the shelving unit you removed from the top.

    1. Cheryl - the shelving unit was too short to stand on its own, so we took it apart and kept the wood for another possible project...it may get re-configured for our laundry room - I'll be sure and post it when its done - thanks for coming by and visiting!!
